roar and sing
by dan wilt
(reflections on eucharist)
hear these sounds of wheat and silver,
baked and filled for choir song
pulsing with a story single
roaring bread and singing cup
too pristine this sanctuary?
not for me, whose wounded life
finds within its hallowed glasswork
breathing hope and dying strife
for within these sounds of wonder
deep resides a melody
food that brings me back to hunger
wine that foams love’s revery
hear these sounds of wheat and silver,
baked and filled for choir song
pulsing with a story single
roaring bread and singing cup

Dan,
This is a beautiful poem. The “roaring bread and singing cup” are gorgeous anthropomorphisms to express Christ’s life bursting out of the communion elements. Maybe they aren’t anthropomorphisms at all. Maybe the Eucharist itself is a type of augmented teaching from Christ still being taught to us today (from Him directly) via our following his directions to remember it. That phrase alone (“roaring bread and singing cup”) brought this all rushing to my mind at once. Thanks for your expression here!
