An excellent interview on passion, self-motivation, letting go, moving forward and self-publishing and the new world of publication.

Backstage with Seth Godin from Michael Hyatt on Vimeo.

Covers these topics (from Michael Hyatt’s blog – follow him here):

  • Why things are the way they are
  • The massive change we are witnessing in almost every field
  • Why the “new normal” is the chance of a lifetime
  • How people can approach change
  • Why we experience stress
  • Why he started The Domino Project and how it is disrupting the publishing industry
  • The old model of publishing compared to the new
  • What kind of push-back has he received from traditional publishers
  • His advice he has for new authors (caution: this is radical)
  • Why authors don’t need to wait to be picked
  • The role of traditional publishers in the future
  • His favorite book out of all the ones he has written (Michael hadn’t even heard of it!)

  1. Some very convincing points here and I would agree with most of this. The free sample is a marketing staple and it does sound like a viable tool for stimulating buzz for a book. However, in order for the concept to work, the writer needs to have obviously created a product worthy of recommending to others and whetting a reader’s appetite for the next book. And that being said, I think that next book needs to be already written and ready to go or at least in the final stages, and that one too needs to have the quality to build reputation and keep the snowballing effect rolling. If this doesn’t happen and too many bad free books begin flooding the market then readers will feel wary of trying the new things and stick to the old.

The free or really cheap concept is promising, but could also backfire if not done right.
